The Pentecostals of West Houston was organized in 1960 in Houston Texas, as Calvary Tabernacle of Spring Branch, largely through the efforts of founding Pastor Billy Cunningham. Property was purchased at 8502 Rayson Street, in the Spring Branch area of Houston, where the first church building was constructed. Additions to the church were completed in 1962 and 1976, and for the next 33 years the church was located on Rayson Street.
In 1993, the church sold the Rayson Street property and purchased approximately 4.5 acres of vacant land located at 6689 Barker Cypress Road in far West Houston, approximately 20 miles west of downtown and near the town of Katy. While preparing to build on the new property, the congregation met in temporary facilities located at 17811 Keith Harrow Boulevard, which was located near the new property. Construction of the current church facility began in 1998 and was completed in 1999. In 2005 construction began on the POWH Family-Life Center, equipped with Sunday School rooms, a Youth Chapel, and a Gymnasium. The multi-use facility was completed in 2006.
The founding pastor, Billy Cunningham served as pastor from 1960 to 1967. He was followed by Jim Shoemake, 1967 to 1975, and Jerry D. Ward, who served from 1975 to 1995. Scott T. Lewis, the present pastor, was elected pastor in 1995.
The Pentecostals of West Houston was known as Calvary Tabernacle of Spring Branch until 1976 when the name was changed to Calvary Tabernacle United Pentecostal Church. In 1997, while at the Keith Harrow location, the name was changed to The Pentecostals of West Houston.
